Responsive Design

The early, Web 1.0 days mostly served the dictates of form following function, with nearly-static content and demands more easily served by a reliance on older, physical models of design, like the printed page. After 2004, a quickly-maturing web environment saw the development of a growing sense of community and connectivity with the appearance of social networking and media sites, and the desire to create shared virtual spaces of user-generated and user-curated content. The demands for an evolving content delivery system and the recognition of the web as a multi-faceted platform for new media, pushed against the constraints of a rigid design, and required a more dynamic approach to presentation.

These shifts only accelerated after 2010, with the arrival of the iPad and the rapid proliferation of internet-capable devices. Whereas before there was only a narrow array of screen sizes, now there was a multitude. Consumers had come to expect content to be portable and easily accessible, and businesses sought to become even more integrated with everyday experiences. Responsive web design, where content can be delivered and organized in a fluid, adaptable manner based on the screen size and viewing environment, evolved to address these rapid changes.

Embracing a new set of design principles can feel like a daunting task, but realizing that your site can benefit from the versatility of a responsive layout is a crucial first step.
